Auto-Chapter numbering

Is there a way to create a field that will maintain & update a chapter number in a Word manuscript?

I read somewhere that this could possibly be done with linking to a custom header. But I'm not sure how that would work - especially if you insert another chapter.

You can do this using a Heading Style, prefixing the Heading's numbering scheme with 'Chapter '. See:

Thanx for the references. But this doesn't seem to answer how to create a chapter number in the document, only in the header.

I think you need to re-read the material in those links! For starters, take a look at Example 1 in the first link ... Then re-read all of the second link.
