How do you attach files to old /new threads? Is this something that gets setup administratively by the moderator?

you can't add files directly, you need something like dropbox and then post a link

Thank you very much mole999. It worked--I used Onedrive.

Such links are volatile; what they represent do most often vanish. And, therefore not that useful to the owner this board and (potential) users of mrexcel. I for one fully agree with the following: http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/about-board/880179-posting-attachments.html#post4264741.

Hi

This whole Attachments “Thing” seems to be one of the most popular discussed things here.....A quick look down this Sub Forum shows that.....

... Bottom line seems to be is that the nice thing characteristic about MrExcel is to encourage keeping as much as possible in the Thread for everyone to see.
...The arguments for keeping everything “visible” in the Thread seem to be:
_1 ) The Thread is much easier to see and follow.
_2 ) It encourages a clearer explanation of the problem, both -2a) eliminating the “lazy” “please see attached” mentality; and _2b) in taking the time to prepare a question can help partly get the thing clear in one’s mind sometimes resulting in answering partly the question.
_3) There are security issues with using external sites and uploading therefrom so.....
_3b) many members are unable or unwilling to upload a file, so audience is restricted. – Another point continually being made by some moderators**
_4) Very importantly as you and many Mods / Administrator have said, the use of external file sharing sites can be very problematic, die to volatility of them, the files or even the entire site can “vanish” as one did on me:
http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/about-board/805962-filesnack-closed-down-alternatives.html
I managed to update the files i had linked using
https://app.box.com/signup/personal
which seems to be reliable enough for many regulars still to use.** But I had only just started then, and for many people that would be very impracticable, searching through Old Threads. And of course many would not wish to or have the time to do that.

_...................

There are in comparison not so many arguments for attachments:, maybe a couple:
_ 1) new members rarely get the above points or know how to get the available to MrExcel screenshot tools working. - First impressions last unfortunately, and some may go elsewhere in the meantime. Some emphasis in encouraging new members to use the tools and explaining them could help there.
http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/lounge...guidelines-using-forum-tools.html#post4378764
_ 2) there are cases when additionally a Workbook could help “paint a thousand” screenshots. But I would emphasise the Additionally
_.............................

The consensus now seems to be that if really posting a Worksheet is necessary, which cannot always be 100% avoided, ( and while strongly discouraged is not yet completely forbidden**) , then either the Question requires and suits posting in a Forum allowing attachments in the Forum rather than externally at a File sharing site., or “stay at MrExcel” but try very hard after the problem is solved to feedback explain where the problem was that could not be “found” without getting the actual Workbook.

**A last thought: the forum is greatly influenced, ( and right fully so IMHO ) by the regulars and MODS within it. I expect in annoyance of continually needing to discuss this Theme that attachments could be 100% banned in the future.
