area graph--making x-axis continuous

I'm making a stacked area graph and the x-axis is "measurement year". I've formatted the years data as numbers, but when I try to make the graph, the x axis is treated as categorical and is equally spaced. I want the x-axis to be continous so that the measurement years are spaced appropriately along a timeline (as it would be in a scatter plot). Can you help me?!! Thanks!!!

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.
Change the axis to a time scale axis: Chart menu > Chart Options > Axes tab, change Primary Cateogry (X) Axis from Automatic to Time Scale. The resolution is still only by integers (all fractions will appear on the integer value), but you could expand the scale somewhat, as I did in this example:
