Are (woeking) circular references no longer possible in Excel?

Many years ago, in the days of Symphony, QuatroPro, and earlier versions of Excel, I used circular references extensively to collect results from different input data sets in extremely large and complex spreadsheets. You could base the selection of inputs and where result data would be stored useing a counter that simply referenced itself and added 1. (Of course you had to set calculations to "manual" and iterations to 1.) Now I have a need to do a similar kind of problem and I can't get Excel to allow and calculate a circular reference. Is this no longer possible? If it is: How? If not: why would they take this capability away?

If you goto File-->Settings-->Formulas you can Check "Enable iterative calculation". You also have an option to set Max Iterations, which I believe defaults to 100.

Spot on. My Excel 2007 menu sequence differed, but the "enable iterative calcularion" option is there and solves the puzzle.

Usually with Excel I'm the guru, but this one stumped me. Thanks very much.
