Hello incredible people. Below, you will see APA citations for articles I have to read. Journal articles end with a number and a parenthesis but only some have page numbers. Books have state names or abbreviation and the end of the citation. I would like a column to identify it I am citing a book or an article.

In the example below, I have only two books. 4 are journal articles. Can anyone help?

Hello Sandy,

You would know because APA states that the following 69(1), 19. is issue number, volume number and page number. Based on what you showed here, that is correct. Two are books and the rest are journals :-)

so if post #5 is correct you can achieve this via Power Query (Get&Transform)

Code:
[SIZE=1]// Table1
let
    Source = Excel.CurrentWorkbook(){[Name="Table1"]}[Content],
    Last2 = Table.AddColumn(Source, "Last Characters", each Text.End([APA Citation], 2), type text),
    Isnumber = Table.AddColumn(Last2, "ISNUMBER", each Value.Is(Value.FromText([Last Characters]), type number)),
    JournalVSBook = Table.AddColumn(Isnumber, "Type", each if Text.Contains([APA Citation], "Journal") then "Journal" else if [ISNUMBER] = true then "Journal" else "Book"),
    Year = Table.AddColumn(JournalVSBook, "Text Between Delimiters", each Text.BetweenDelimiters([APA Citation], "(", ")"), type text),
    Type = Table.TransformColumnTypes(Year,{{"Text Between Delimiters", Int64.Type}}),
    Greater = Table.AddColumn(Type, ">2016", each if [Text Between Delimiters] > 2016 then "Yes" else "No"),
    Rename = Table.RenameColumns(Greater,{{"Text Between Delimiters", "Year"}, {"APA Citation", "Reference"}}),
    ROC = Table.SelectColumns(Rename,{"Type", ">2016", "Year", "Reference"})
in
    ROC[/SIZE]

Thank you so much, I am looking at how to add this to my excel document as we speak. Again, thank you so much.

in short:
select your source table (range), from Data tab choose From Table. It will open PQ Editor, replace code with copied from the post. Header should be the same as in my post. Then Close&Load and it should load result table into the sheet.

btw. this is NOT vba!

edit:
fix this record:
Yin, K. (2014). Case study research: Design and methods (5th ED.). Thousand Oaks,
CA: Sage Publications.

because there are two rows not one in your post

eg. source table should be

[Table="width:, class:head"]
