I've been doing it by sorting on a column with free form text and then sorting based on the character in position 8. This assumes people enter text with no real pattern but I'm finding that over time I'm getting disproportionate numbers of some kinds of data. Is there a better way? Randomly changing cell color would work, too.

Hello, do you mean something like:

Excel Formula:
=SORTBY(A1:A10,RANDARRAY(ROWS(A1:A10),,0,1))
