adding new item to drop down list by directly typing into the cell

The shortcoming of drop down list in DATA > validation - is that you can not add new item directly into the cell with the drop down button. The only way to do this is to bring out the drop down list and make the necessary editing.
It would be nice if we can just input directly into the cell new items so that the next time we lookup the drop down list, it will be there.. or can VBA do this feat?

Is your Data Validating list devoted to just one cell or a range in a certain column?

How do you add values now to your Data Validation list.
Is your data validation list of values entered into the List Box One by one like this:
George,Bob,Mary

Or is it entered as a range of values?

the drop down list is in one range of column.
entries are added in many rows under one column. one item per row.
say the drop down list of customers is in column Q, the list will be entered into Q1 for customer 1,Q2 for customer 2,Q3 customer 3 etc..
and in the cell (say column C) with the drop down button, the user can then select..
problem is that new entry cannot be inputted directly into the cell -- it has to be done in the drop down list..
