any recommendations on access and sql 'can't do without' book list?

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Access 2000 or Access 2002 Developers Handbooks Volumes 1 and 2 by Getz, Litwin and Gilbert. Not for beginners, mainly VBA but incredibly useful. One of these blokes was the Product Manager for VBA at Microsoft so they definitely know there stuff.

See here for more details.
