Access 2007 password protection.

I have an Access 2007 database that I have protected with a password. I have been using SyncToy to synchronize this database with an identical one stored off network...one that I can make structural changes to without interrupting the work of people who need to use the database. The problem is that something has gone haywire with the password protection. The password still works on open, but when you close the database, it asks for a password again. Also, the typical way to remove the password protection is to click on the "Decrpt..." button in database tools...this button changes from "Encrypt...." to "Decrypt..." when a password is set. This database is password protected, but the "Encrypt...." button is still there. If I click it it acts like it is trying to set a database password, but will not accept any passwords. Is there any way to fix this, or will I have to copy everything over to a new database to fix this? Thank for any help.

It sounds like you might need to copy everything over to another database, as a starting point.
Then split the database into a back end (tables), linked to a front end (everything else). Basically you will have the back end on a shared network drive, and copies of the front end on every user's PC (on the C drive is best; not another network location, if you can avoid it). Each user can then make their changes to a single dataset. You get to make your design changes on a development copy of the front end, and when you are ready you give each user a new copy of the front end. The data remains untouched.

Advantages:
Data is separated from logic
If you have a crash it's usually the front end (forms, reports, code) that goes wrong. Throw away the dud front end, replace it with a working copy, and you're up and running again.
If you get the design right, there is less network traffic
You can distribute a compiled version of the front end so users can't play with forms, reports or code. This will have an .mde or .accde extension, depending on what database format you are using in 2007.

Thanks for the advise Denis.

This is exactly what I plan to do, but I am not quite at that stage yet. The users are currently using excel "Run Sheets" that link to data lists in Access to provide some list data for controled entry. I am currently the only one who can actually do anything to the database...even the run sheets only connect tot he specific things I tell it to and they cannot change any data.

I did go ahead and transfer everything over to a new database, and I will check tomorrow to see how everything worked. I am hoping it was just a random bug, but it has taught me to be more careful with how I update the database. I keep a good record of back-ups so that is the good news.

This wouldn't be an issue at all except that the database is locked from structural changes while anyone has the Excel run sheets open...this can make it difficult to make any real changes during the day...and the lack of raises has made me less enthusiastic to do any work on my own time. Oh well, I will find another way...I am leery of the SyncToy thing now, so I don't think I will use it anymore...I will at least test it out a bit more first.
