I have a file that when being opened, the progress bar gets to about 60% and then pauses and the file takes around 2-3 minutes to open.

The file is a template file and when data is added it can increase to around 18mb but when saving it takes even longer.

I made some very minor changes to the template file that was basically adding about 50 cells worth of very simple conditional formatting and the file then started to take even longer to open and save (5+ minutes).

Can anyone suggest what could be wrong and possible offer a solution?

TIA

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
There are some hidden columns in the majority of the sheets.

Hidden Columns drastically increase the size of the spreadsheet for some reason.

This is probably the cause.

Its a pain, but i learnt this the hard way. What for me started out at a sub 1MB file, jumped to over 5MB with columns hidden.

the fix was to copy all the used range to a new workbook, and start again.
