I am trying to add a Sparkline in its most basic form. My data set is 10, 8, 7, and 9. When I select the 4 cells in A1, B1, C1, and D1 and attempt to place the sparkline in E1 I receive an error message "Data source is not valid."

Is there a setting or add-in that I need to enable?

I am using Excel 2010 and I don't understand why this simply example is not working. I appreciate your help!!

When they said...
When they said you are going to "Excel at life", they meant you "will be doing Excel your whole life".
First time I've tried a sparkline!

I entered the data as you describe - as numbers. I assume your numbers are numbers not text?

I then clicked in cell E1, from the Insert Ribbon selected 'Sparkline' and completed the dialogue box with 'Data Range' by highlighting the cells A1:D1, 'A1:D1' appeared in the 'Data Range' box. Click OK and it worked!

I agree that it should work exacly as you stated, but I get the "Data source is not valid." error. I am a strong Excel user, but this is really frustrating... such a simple function not working. I suspect there is an add-in or some setting that needs to be enabled. I work for a very large company and I am wondering if the standard Excel setup may disable the function...

Did you select the cells individually so that the range appears as A1,B1,C1,D1 in the Data Range box? It needs to be A1:D1.
