X is greyed out

Hi all,
I cannot close excel once I open a book. The Close function dissapears and the X on the title bar is faded and not-functional. Any ideas. I have uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck.
Office 2000.

Is it with every workbook or just a particular one? It could be a macro running which disabled the close options. I actually wrote such a macro recently for a questioner on this board.
