using the @ symbol w/o creating a link

Everytime I use the @ symbol it tries to creat a link. why can't I just use it as it is.

Hi John

looks like Excel has decided you want an e-mail even if you don't. It doesn't even supply an option to turn this feature off, which i find a bit poor! Anway paste this link into your address bar and read all about it and some workarounds.
