unrecognizable format

Whenever I open Excel 97 I get a message saying that the file is an unrecognizable format. If I click cancel the document opens normally. If I click OK the document opens as gibberish then converts to a readable format. I've checked the file associations and reinstalled Office. All other Office apps work fine.

Is your personal.xls file corrupt?
It's normally located at C:\program files\microsoft office\office\xlstart.
you could try moving or deleting all the files in that folder to see if it makes a difference.
