Team selection

We have an upcoming karting event where 30 drivers will run their qualifying rounds and 10 teams (of 3 drivers each) will be selected from the group for the final race. As the qualifying times of each individual may vary considerably, my aim is to have Excel sort the laptime data and form 10 teams (of 3 drivers each), with the aggregate times (of the 3 drivers of each team) to be as close together from one another as possible. The idea is to form 10 closely matched teams. Would anyone know of a formula that can help me out?

Tks

If you the drivers names in one column and their times in another you can just sort the list by the times. Do you need to do any more than that?

Jacob has a start, but I believe you want to then match the people into 10 teams of 3 each. From what you originally asked, I assume there are more than 30 entrants, and that you will be using the top 30 in the final 10 teams. Is this task going to be done several times (i.e., needing a program to select the teams), or is it just this time, in which you can be more interactive with the computer in selecting the teams?

As I recall from a computer module that set up pairings not too disimilar from your request, the requirement will be for a complex program that may take a while to write. However, if you can work with the computer in the selection process, something may be able to be accomplished in a shorter period. How much time do you have before the program is needed?

What is the typical time lapse (or speed) for the time trials? If you the drivers names in one column and their times in another you can just sort the list by the times. Do you need to do any more than that? Jacob
