Spreadsheet will not add or delete columns

Posted by Linda on July 21, 2001 12:07 PM

I have a large accounting spreadsheet (created in Excel 97) in which I used almost all the columns but only about 300 rows. When I sent the spreadsheet to my boss, the file size was about 2.5 megs, but when she returned it, it had grown to 4.5 megs. She believes that the only thing she did to it was update some names and numbers. Now, however, the spreadsheet locks up whenever I try to add or delete a column or a row. I get an error message that there's not enough virtual memory. It's not my computer because it's a Pentium 3 with little of the memory space used. I've tried to delete the formatting and contents in the empty cells, but it still doesn't work right. Please help!

OK firts did you email the Sheet, i guess so! if you use Windows expect this, Windows report very ODD results, just the way it is, if you went to floppy YUCK! i would stick by the same, see is a sectors thing and tracks and get a bit silly and complex (not worth the effoer) Dos Partioioning and this and that FORGET it it will and does, think of it as majic.

OK Firstly is Excel working on all other files OK or freezes, if so re save an rename to new and change the original to _old.xls and re try its wobbley MS products.

More Is the Sheet dead that is you can kill it all the formulas can be converted to text and that OK if you do or must they stay active? if so copy|paste special|paste as value (Sellect all will be fine for this)

Rem to save as ABS _New Killed.xls and then the original will be acyive

Let me know... is auto cal on/off .. hit F9 and see

Yes, the spreadsheet was sent via e-mail. I couldn't save it on a floppy as the file was too large.

One other thing--My boss changed the name of the original file. Could this be part of the problem? If I change the name back to the original filename, would that help?

Excel is working fine on all my others files, and yes, autocalc is on. I cannot change the cells to text as the file is a perpetual one that we need to keep updating.

Thanks for your help! Could you suggest anything else please?

OK rename it as i explained, forget the size if its a report kill it, if not share it on the network as a shared file so both can look and amend on any network drive so no email and then you both can edit and track changes

Also if your on an network the IT dept wil have the server loaded to Excel not you desktop I PRAY so varify the file errmm right click on the excel icon and varify should appear the click it takes 2 mins and then save\close excel and open and close and shut down and re boot from clod that leave the PC off for the time you take to make a coffee and re boot load excel and open the new file (turn auto cal off is a paid and works badly hit F9 to update , makes me thik have you the add-in auto save loaded if so turn it off its dreadfuk and causes problema nd crashes Excel, dont know why for the message.)

Any auto cal or save can mess Excel up and could this be the prob, as when it cals it stops and does all the data so could look like ages how long is it out for , do you re load, i guess not as you have not said you loos data which you would from last save..

Left me know if you need more ... do you have email?? Where are you??? time in London 8.46PM

I believe that the Excel is loaded on my PC, not the network. I cannot check the other things right now, as I'm home, not at work (until Wednesday), but I'll try all these things then and post a follow-up! Thanks for your help. If you think of anything else, please post it. Thx!

Cool Erm.. best what we do is stick on this link, just for ease, I would be supprised if your IT dept have Excel on the C:\ drive ?? possible but i will be supprised, i add everyone thinks it is on your PC even the file structure will look like it there but NOPE, you will have a common drive where you should place you files, See you could have C and D drives, but D will not really be on your PC it a section of the company server thus why i suggested verafy the program, its a rebuild and reset defults to Excel, sometimes works, if you use Armagaden the this will be you network and i will be correct also NT or Novell as the same.. Check with a friend in IT Dept show them this they should know what im talking about, else tellthem to UNINSTALL Excel do not delete it and them reinstall it this will cure it, all i can say is if you have emaillet me know and ill email you and send me the sheet and ill sort it for you, maybe check SCAN for nasty Virus LArus is French fairly harmless but loves Excel 4 and above SCAN the files and this could be some of your problems, but Larus is a mick mouse thing not like LOVE BUG or BUBBLE BOY or HomePage(thats the Pron Virus) they are well nasty. So sacn i would , does your company allow external Email do you have Virus checker, and firewall, is it up to date .. do you have full licenced Excel theres loads of questions all can be solved, but with out the file i can only list all the things i would and have tried. I bet Excel reload will cure or is custom set to some silly setting.

ill keep a eye on this site and ill try to help, maybe you have hotmail ill sent to that, i dont give my email as i have no email at home people would annoy me with billions of questions, i have enough at work I help eceryone so keep asking, i even answer every email and will answer every post .. just my way... take care

Best o luck...... 11.48pm London Bed....tommorow

Logging back on the WWW you have not got VBA Scripts running have you to do (i dont know) does the macro warning box come up when you open the file???? Do you VBA Script???

OK. Here's what I ended up doing. I copied each of the worksheets to a new file, selecting only the data that I had, not the entire worksheet. The new file seems to work fine now. Thanks a lot for all the help! :-)
