Sorting data

I need to be able to sort data by a unique id which can be upto eight or ten charcters long, and starts with either 2 or 3 numbers, and then 2 or 3 letters, and then finishes of with letters. However i need to be able to sort by the first groups of letters, and then the group of numbers. I have tried to make a new column by using Left & Mid but this wont work. Any ideas ??? this is driving me mad, as nobody else can help me anywhere else.
