reduce excel 97 file size

Does Excel 97 have a function to reduce a workbook's file size? i am looking for something similar to Access's Compact Database.

Also, has anyone ever tried to save a workbook and gotten the message 'Couldn't Save'. i kept trying and trying and kept getting that message. i tried 'save as' to save it to another directory, but i still got that same message.
