probelm with Excel 97 worksheets lose column width formatting

I've had several Windows95(OSR2) machines with Office 97 PRO, randomly lose some formatting settings in Excel 97. A worksheet will sometimes loose column width settings when the worksheet is just opened and closed, opened and closed on the same computer. No changes are made to the spreadsheet. No changes to OS like default printer, etc.
It appears to mostly random.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I have not encountered this but was aware that this happened....as a work around (should really
get to the root of the problem)
I created a macro that would take your workbooks
column settings save this and then when openning
the workbook up it would restore them......
If interested I can send you the macro.......
BUT should really look for the root cause.

---> Note: not a solution...
I have had similar problems, and in my case, they were originally Lotus 1-2-3 files. I am convinced that Excel's dealing column widths with 1-2-3 files is problematic. The other nagging issue is the automatic border color is grey instead of black.
Any thoughts?
