pattern in even rows only

i'm trying to have the even rows/cells shaded for quick viewing... any suggestions? if you do it manually (format/cells/patterns), then you add a row and perform a sort, the shaded cells follow the row. then the even rows are no longer shaded. thanks in advance for any help. (and i don't want to use the preformatted spreadsheets if possible)

Select/activate the range of interest.
Activate Format|Conditional Formatting.
Select "Formula is" for "Condition 1" in the Conditional Formatting window.
Enter the following formula:

=MOD(ROW(),2)=0

Activate the Format button.
Choose on the Patterns tab the color you want.
Click OK.
