Negative Number Help

I download financial data for use in Excel, unfortunately the downloads come across with the negative numbers having a minus sign after the number, such as 33444.00-. Excel does not recognize this as a number and it can't be used in mathematical formulas. Converting the cell to numeric format in Excel doesn't help. Excel seems to treat the number as text. I believe the number needs to be changed to a true negative number with the minus sign infront of the number, such as -33444.00. I cannot figure out how to do that. Is it possible???
