Manual/Automatic recalculation

Could you please tell me what are manual and automatic recalculation, and in what circumstances they would be used

Manual recalculation means that you have to calculate the spreadsheet by pressing the F9 key. Automatic recalculation means that the workbook is recalculated every time a change is made. I use manual calculation when I have a very large spreadsheet that takes a long time to calculate. That way I don't have to wait for Excel to calculate the spreadsheet each time I make a change (I get to control when it is calculated).
