Links wont update

I have cells where I have asked them to gather information from other cells using this format:
=H9
and even the functions such as SUM and whatnot wont update automatically when I change the reference cell content.
Under Edit, Links, I have it check marked to update automatically.
Can anybody guess what the problem might be?

Well, let's see... Does it say, "Calculate", on
Excel's status (lower) bar? If so, your
calcuation mode is probably set to Manual. To
check and/or change this use the Tools Options...
menu command, click on the Calculation tab, and
choose the Automatic option.

True, but ...
... what if you don't want everything to update at this point. I have been down this road as well and when you turn the Calculations back to automatic, all formulae on all pages run again.
How do you get a selection of cells to calculate?

It's all or nothing... unless you go to each cell, press F2 and enter.
