Keep detail data together when sorting

Is there any way to keep detail data rows with their respective summary rows when sorting. Hiding the rows doensn't work.

Huh? Please explain in greater detail.

Outlined?

Is your data outlined?

Yes, data is outlined

Summary rows may have variable number of detail rows (i.e. 2 or 3 rows of detail, some have no rows of detail data).

I need to sort the summary rows but keep the details with the summary rows.

The sheet is in outline format, but when I try to sort by the values in column A (which contains data in the summary row but is empty in the details row) the supposedly grouped data does not stay together.

Any ideas?

Re: Yes, data is outlined

Are you collapsing the outline to show just the
summary rows before you attempt to sort?

Yes outline collapsed

Yes I am collapsing the outline to only show the summary rows. After sorting detail rows stay with each other but not with the correct summary row.

That's odd!

I'm struggling to understand what could be wrong.
When I simulate your scenario it works fine for me!
Where do we go from here?

Thanks

Maybe the workbook is corrupted? Or worse the app is. I will probably re-install Excel 2000 and relaod my add-ins.

I figured something was wrong but haven't found any mention at MS sites on sort order for outlined data.
