insterting a row into data that is linked

I have source data in a file. I also have another file that has some of the information from the source file linked to it. Why is it that when I insert a row into the source data, it isn't automatically updated to file that is linked to it?

The file that links to the source data will be updated automatically IF this file and the source file are open at the time of inserting the additional line. Beware however that inserting a line may affect the referencing cell value. Also look at using 'Named Ranges'
