How to import date format from Excel to Access?

We have a spreadsheet that we are trying to import into
Access. It works fine except cells that were entered in
date format. The numeric value (36850 instead of 11/20/00)
is what gets imported into Access. Changing the format
from date to text in Excel changes the value to the
date numeric value. Is there someway to convert the date
to text and have it display in date format: 11/20/00?
Or some way to convert those numeric values to date
format in Access? Any suggestions or help appreciated.
