File size Excel in Office 2000 v Excel '97

Posted by Christopher Maddocks on October 26, 2000 2:38 AM

Any reason why when I save a spreadsheet under Office 2000 Excel the file is 238KB but when I use the "Save as 97" option it bloats out to 1973kb. Any ideas to reduce "97" file size

This may not work but try the following suggested by Bob Umlas :-

Hold the shift key and open it in Excel 97 (if written in 2000) or in Excel 2000 (if written in 97), then save it and close it.

Would be interested to know if it works.
Bob Umlas doesn't know why it works(if it does!) and neither do I - does anyone know?

I can only summise that the shift key reacts as
a typical windows shift key press when used on
a command ie. disables a certain feature or reverses
the feature.....in this case it will disable the
Dual format feature of the saveas.
I think it is the dual format feature that bloats
your file size.
