Exporting data to a text file

I am trying to write a macro to export selected text from an excel spreadsheet into a .txt file. I have tried to use the macro recorder, but it will not open up notepad as I have in my recording. Is there a way to program a macro in excel to open another software program? or is there a way to dump data into a text file?
