Excel windows ME problems... LOCKING UP!!!

Hello I have recently installed windows ME and
under that I have installed office 2000.. Everything
works properly on the system EXCEPT excel!!! :( I have
tried all service patches.. I have used memory optimzers
and nothing works.. Aso soon as a book is opened in excel
the program locks the whole computer.. I have to restart.

Hi,
Two awful excel hangs on one day, must be Monday (here anyway). The uninstall/reinstall (please make sure there is an intervening REBOOT before the reinstall or it won't do any good) could help and certainly won't hurt. Here's a couple of other things to look at
1) is it a particular workbook that wont open, or is it all of them
2) is there a difference in your success when you try opening workbooks from within excel (from the file open command) or from windows explorer (double clicking on the *.xls workbook when excel is not running).
3) does excel open a blank workbook when you launch? If so have you tried saving that blank workbook, will it reopen, or does it give you the same error?
4) did you "upgrade" an old O/S like windows 98, or (please say no) windows 95, or did you perform a new install on a freshly formatted hard drive? If you did the former, I hate to say it but you could be in for some more surprises as time marches on, especially if upgrading from 95 to ME.
1) is trying to get at specifically corrupted files, 2) is trying to get at excel vs. windows ME registry problems, and 3) is trying to get at version conflict issues. 4) is trying to break the news to you that you may have to format the hard drive if you upgraded to ME from windows 95.

I will try the uninstall install fix with excel only then with all of office if the first doesnt work.
ANSWER: ANY WORKBOOK HANGS AFTER ABOUT 2 MINUTES OF IDLE TIME.
ANSWER: I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT METHODS OF OPENING EXCEL AND WORKBOOKS NO LUCK :(
ANSWER: OPENS JUST TO EXCEL 2000 NOTHING ELSE
ANSWER: I FORMATTED THE DRIVE AND INSTALLED WINME ONLY WITH OFFICE 2000 ON TOP. ALL SERVICE PACKS HAVE BEEN APPLIED (WINDOWS AND OFFICE) AND IT HAS HAPPENED EVERYTIME BETWEEN APPLICATIONS. ONLY EXCEL FREEZES EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS FINE. MULTITASKING ISN'T PROBLEM UNLESS EXCEL IS BROUGHT IN TO THE PICTURE.
