Excel learning(want your advice)

I am thinking of studying excel in more detail, but before I do that I would like some some advice, I am currently an intermediate.
Do you think I should learm macros, or are they old news, or maybe visual basic?
I currently do not know anything about those 2 languages, so please base your advice on that.
if there are ways for me to avoid these 2 languages then please state as well.

Learn VB, it is the language that Macros are written in.
