excel file size

How has an excel workbook file I've generated grown to over 800 Kb
in size? I'm, running Office 97 on a Windows NT4.0 platform.
What I often do is take an older file and save as a new file
to save my formatting. HOw the heck has a file that started at 33KB
swollen up to 600-800 Kb (yes I do have some graphs and tables) on separate worksheets
in these files. As a consequence, editing and scrolling through files becomes
like working on early versions in DOS on opiates!
What's a quick fix to reduce the size of such files?

Make a backup of your file then start a new workbook. Cut and Paste all of the data from your old workbook into the new one. Charts sheets will need to be moved via Edit>Move or Copy Sheet.

It is important that you only move or cut+paste data/charts creating copies will cause problems with formulas and data series references (this is why you need the backup if it all goes wrong!)

Once you have finished delete close the original file and overwrite it with the new one. (again the backup is important if you forgot to copy something)

What this procedure does is eliminates all of the 'useless' information that excel collects in a file which is reused over time (formats of empty cells etc)
