Does anybody know the best format for saving photos in excel?

Hello all,
I have created a program in excel with a front page with photos on it. There are about 8 small images (approx 100k in total), however when I save the file it adds about an extra meg to the file size. Is there a way to save the photos as a certain type or something of the like, so as to reduce the total file size. The photos are part of a menu, so i need them showing, thus cant just point links to the photos.
I would greatly appreciate any input.

Mate, that is a great help - immediately I have been able to reduce the file size by 1 meg in total. Thankyou so much for your help.
