Ciopy problem with Excel

I am using Excel 2000. I'm trying to use some data from an excel '95 spreadsheet to create a new spreadsheet. No matter how I try, I am not able to copy data from the old sheet to the new. I keep getting an error that I cannot paste because the copy area is a differrent size or shape, but this happens even when I try to copy a single cell! I've tried to save the sheets under a variety of different formats to no avail. Any ideas?

Did you try "Paste Special" using formulas or values etc ONLY.

Would you be able to copy and paste rows or columns?

Can you open the document with 2000 and then resave it under a different name, and then try to copy and paste.

also make sure that all cells are unmerged in both sheets before attempting to copy
