Changing the xlLastCell setting

On a worksheet the last cell with data becomes the SpecialCells(xlLastCell). However, it seems that if the data is removed, the xlLastCell setting is not updated automatically. If I delete all the empty rows including the xlLastCell it seems to make no difference.
Is there any way of changing this setting?
