Changing defaults

I am opening a text file in Excel. The only problem is that my default values are not staying. I want to keep the column width 15 and the columns as numbers, but everytime that it opens the files, it changes to something other than the default. Is there any way to change this?

That doesn't work. It starts with the empty document right, but when i go to open the text file, it goes back to the old formatting. Thank you anyway

Hi Bethany
Create a worksheet as you wish it to reappear, save it to a specific location within your computer but save it as a template.
Under Tools, Options- General. ensure that your alternate startup file location is set to the specific location you chose above. Close Excel and restart - should work....
