certain cell colors based on cell values

I have a simple worksheet that we use as a staff in/out schedule. I would like to have all cell text values equal to "out" in red and all cell text values equal to "in" in green. What would the macro look like?

You don't need a macro - it can be done with Conditional Formatting.
If cell A1 is the cell you want to format, in the Conditional Formatting "Formala Is" box, type =A1="Out" as condition 1 and =A1="In" as condition 2 (and set the desired formats for each condition).

If you have Excel 97, have you tried
using Conditional Formatting?
