Calculations using Cells in multiple .xls files?

Hi everyone,
i have to calculate averages from cells in different excel files. There are more than 100 of these files, and merging them into one .xls file would be a lot of work.
Is there a elegant way to use multiple files in calculations?

Not much info to go on but would array formulas work ?
