Auto Text with info from above cell

How come sometimes a cell automatically gets filled with information from cells above it and some time it does not. Is there an on/off feature? If yes, where.

I can't speak for the fickleness of this feature, but if it bugs you, it can be turned off. Go to Tools/Options/Edit, and deselect the box that reads "Enable AutoComplete for Cell Values".

I have this checked, as I like the feature
it works on my machine at work (Excel 97, Win 95, Novell) but not on my machine at home (Excel 97, Win ME)
Just a simple list of name :
Betty
Chris
Andrew
Bob
starting in cell A1
will not autocomplete if I begin typing : "An" in cell A10
*shrugs*

It looks like you have some blank cells before your next entry. I think it only works if there are no blanks. Mike.

and when there *are* blank cells, then the right-clicked "pick from list" takes over
