Significant Numbers???

Is there a way to show two significant numbers (ie. 12, 1.2, .12) in a column? This particular column has data entered automatically from various areas within the workbook. The "scientific" setting from the general tab isn't quite what I need as it is too general in decimal placement. Perhaps one of the "custom" settings from the general tab? Or a user created one?
