Random numbers

Trying to set up a sheet with random numbers so that they do not recalculate each time a cell is highlighted. Help files state that "F9" will fix the value but this does not seem to work for me. All I get when with F9 is the dialog box to setup the function keys, with in the Mac OS, not for excel.
Any hints on how to fix this value.

Thanks,
Dave

F9 is used to calculate a formula (i.e., convert
it to its resultant value) only when the formula
bar is active. The formula bar is active when
"Edit" appears on the left side of the Status
bar.

If you want to preserve a set of random numbers
so that they're not recalculated use Copy/Paste
Special Values.
