Pesky Decimals

Posted by Rick on August 16, 2001 10:10 AM

I was wondering if it was possible to add decimal points to prexisting numbers. Example:

make 123456=1234.56

Any help is apprieciated.

In a blank cell somewher, enter .01 and copy it. Then select the cells you want to change and choose Paste Special, selecting the Multiply Option

If you want the number just to look like it has 2 decimal places use custom format

0"."00

if you WANT it to be 2 places

in the next column put

=a1/100

format to two decimals

If the number is the result of a calculation, re-formating the range for your decimal requirements will work, as Excel stores the full number not just what is displayed. If your number was entered without the decimal, reformat the range and add the remainder to a range the add the two cells. like: In A1 is 1234 and Y1 is 0.56, in Z1 put =A1+Y1 then set A1 =Z1 in A1 yiu will get 1234.56. Can't have it both ways...

...either 1234.56+1 = 1235.56 or it doesn't...
and it doesn't if "1234.56" is really 123456.
