Hi Anne,
This is one quick way.
Click on A and activate the option Format, Cells and choose a Date example, say 04-Mar-97 (this is the European style)
Enter in A1
1-Jan-2001 and in A2
=EDATE(A1,1) [Copy down this formula as far as needed ]
Note. Look at EDATE under Index (of Contents and Index). It describes how to activate EDATE if not available on your system.

Hi Anne
1. Type your first date in the cell you want then click in the cell.
2. Right click on the fill handle (little black square bottom left) and drag down as far as needed.
3. Release the right mouse button and make your choice.
Better ?
....Or type 1/1/2001 in A1 and 2/1/2001 in A2.
Now highlight both cells and left click on the fill handle and drag down.

Oops. Fill handle is bottom RIGHT not left :-)
I would like to be able to insert a date into a cell and then have the cells beneath that cell increase at one month intervals. For instance, I would like to type 1/1/2001 into cell A1 and then have 2/1/2001 automatically appear in cell A2 and 3/1/2001 automatically appear in cell A3.
