Aaaagh! Paste Function has ceased to work

I have been using the basic cleaning and length functions for months (i.e. =len(a2))and pasting this down the whole column....
suddenly i find that on pasting all the other cells repeat the copied value, in spite of the fact that the other cells refer to the correct cell.
Am i going mad?

Do they update when you hit F9? Is so, your sheet is probably manually calculating.
