Protection!

Is it possible in excel to protect the formulas in some columns without protecting the entire sheet?

It certainly is. Go into Format, Cells and choose the Protection tab. Cells are locked by default. Unlock any cells that you don't want protecting and make sure that any cells that you do want protecting have the Locked box ticked. Now protect the sheet - you'll be able to edit unlocked cells.
