Formulas not calculating - I've toggled something but what?

I must have toggled some formula setting by mistake.

If I have references like =A1 pre-existing in my spreadsheet they are fine and pull the value from the A1 cell. However, now, if I edit the formula to say =A2, the text "=A2" appears in the cell NOT the value from A2. Pls help, it is driving me potty.

I should add: I haven't turned calc off, more like formula view stuck for some cells!

This sounds as though the cells are formatted as text. Try changing the format of the cells to Number or General and then typing the formula in again.
