When I enter data on an Excel spreadsheet they appear as dates.How do i Change that?

Two possibilities:
Do a File|New.
Activate Format|Cells.
Look on the Number tab what the format is. If it's Date, change it to General.
Or, if you're getting date in a particular sheet when you type a number in some cell, activate Format|Cells and change the format of the cell on the Number tab to either General or Number.
