Converting Dates

I have a column of cells in excelthe look like the following:
30-Sep-01
and it seems to be text based. I am trying to change this to a date format so that I many calculate how many days ..... and so on. I try to format the cells and it does not seem to work.
If i double click the cells however it then changes to the date format after i move to a new cell. Strange. Any suggestions?

Enter 1 in an empty cell and copy. Select text-formatted date range, activate Edit|Paste Special, choose Multiply.
Date format the range and delete the cell with the value of 1.
