Convert text to date format

Posted by Jules on February 15, 2002 6:34 AM

I have raw data which has been exported to a txt file. I open this in Excel (sort data into columns), and the column with the date shows as "Nov 9 2001" but it is text formatted. Is there anyway I can convert this to a date?

Format, Cells. Numbers tab, select "Date" and which style you want.

After selecting your date column values choose
the Data | Text to Columns... menu command.
Click on "Delimited" at Step 1 of 3 and press
the [ Next> ] button until you reach Step 3 of 3.
Click on the "Date" Column data format radio
button and choose "MDY" from its dropdown list.
Press [ Finish ]. Format your newly converted
date values as desired.

Formatting doesn't change the data type (in this
case, text) of the internally stored value. Date
formatting has no effect on text values.
