Illegal Operation Message

This doesn't mean that you have performed an illegal operation, but that Excel has. Often this is caused by an internal problem in Excel, such as the executable binary being corrupted. It can also occur when you try to do something in Excel that the designers never in their wildest imaginations ever guessed that anyone would do, and so didn't provide code to handle it. Chances are that if you are just editing a cell, it is the former, and you may have to re-load Excel.
