Can't open previously created spread sheet

I created a spread sheet in Excel. Went on vacation and someone went to work on it and now it will only open up in Microsoft Word. In excel it is still listed in with my files but it gives me an error message "cannot open in this format" You can only open it in Word! Tried doing a "Save As" and changing the .doc extension to .xls and "Save" but that didn't work. I need help in putting it back into Excel Format!

Try opening the file in word. then saving it as a
txt file.
then in Excel open it up. Unfortunately you will only get the values and no objects eg grphs, images etc.
There may be another way ?? Have a look around ??
